Night and Day statues (1519-1534) are allegorical representations of Night as a woman and Day as a man, created by Michelangelo for the Tomb of Giuliano de' Medici--the leader of one of the most powerful banking families in Florence during the Renaissance. As Night prepares to rest, Day in counterpoise prepares to get up--thus continuing the calendar's eternal cycle.
