In her cat paintings, Ronner-Knip concentrated on animal scenes in the lush Belle Epoch interiors popular at the time. The animals have individual personalities and almost human characteristics. In this artwork, Cat on stool named Tomfoolery (1890), the elder cat looks on from a cushion at the playful interactions of the surrounding kittens.
