In her cat paintings, Ronner-Knip concentrated on animal scenes in the lush Belle Epoch interiors popular at the time. The animals have individual personalities and almost human characteristics. In this artwork, The Best of Friends (1890), the elder cat looks over a kitten who climbs on her perch and several others (in the painting) as a friendly dog enters the scene. The sculpture recreates the delicate balance of youthful play and mature concern.
