Zeus ruled over the sky and all atmospheric phenomena -- winds, clouds, rain, thunder, and lightning. The oak, thunderbolt, and eagle are his attributes. This Zeus sculpture head is reproduced after an original full body bronze sculpture (ca. 460-460 BC) in the Athens National Museum and is one of the finest surviving Greek bronzes. Found in the sea off of Cape Artemision, the full sculpture illustrates Zeus (sometimes thought to be Poseidon) in a traditional pose with his right arm raised to hurl a thunderbolt. This bust taken from the full figure sculpture is an excellent example of the ancient Greeks' sculpting talents with its stylized hair and beard, and dignified idealized face.
Zeus Bust from Artemision is made from compound stone, bronze finish, black marble base, 10"H.
