Akhenaten Offering to Aten the Solar Disc
Egyptian Relief

Egyptian Museum, Cairo. Dynasty XVIII 1370 B.C. Akhenaton, originally named Amenhotep IV, ruled Egypt for 17 years (1367-1350 b.c.) together with his beautiful Queen Nefertiti, he was Son of Amenhotep III. Like his father before him, Akhenaton initially recognized the power of the priests of Amun at Thebes but after the fifth year of his reign, he changed the state cult of Amun to that of Aten, the unique God represented as the sun-disk with its rays ending in small hands. This was a huge shift for Egypt from Polytheism to Monotheism, the belief in one god instead of many. This began two decades of religious reforms overthrowing millennia of traditional religious and civil life. Akhenaten was also responsible for a new artistic direction that contrasted with existing conventions. This art form became known as "Amarna art" which intentionally featured the pharaoh's body and face as elongated and deformed. Here, Akhenaton together with his wife Nefertiti and one of their daughters are seen worshipping the Aten. Made from compound stone, sandstone finish, ready to hang, 11"H.
