The column is characterized by ribbing (bulges around the column) which form a "clustered column". This column style was frequently used in church and cathedral architecture. It added more visual detail to the architecture and more strength to support the massively tall church nave. The Gothic Art period is recognized as an era of intense church building in civic centers made popular by pilgrams who visted the relics housed in the many Cathedrals along pilgrimmage routes.
