This Attica Oinochoe Red Figure Vase is from 560 BC. Ajax fought with the Greeks during the Trojan War and was believed by many, and himself, to be the greatest warrior next to Achilles. After Achilles fell in battle and a dispute erupted as to whom Achilles armor should be awarded to. Ajax became infuriated when the armor was awarded to Odysseus and not himself. Ajax was so upset that he decided to murder all his Greek comrades. Athena cast a spell on Ajax that made him believe a herd of cattle were his old comrades. Ajax slaughtered every last one of them, but after he was finished, he felt awful for what he had done and decided to honorably kill himself. Depicted here is the classic suicide for a Greek hero. This vase is no longer manufactured, once sold, it is gone forever. The painted details have a recently unearthed finish. Measures 12" x 5.5" x 18" Round.
