Botticelli was an Italian painter and extremely successful for a while. With the emergence of the High Renaissance style (early 16th century), however, he fell out of fashion, died in obscurity. Only recently due to the interests of Ruskin and the Pre-Raphaelites, has he been elevated back up to the position of one of the best-loved Quattrocento painters. His nickname "Botticelli" means "little barrel" and was originally bestowed on his older brother. For some reason, it was adopted by the younger painter brother.
