Like "The Thinker" and many other well-known sculptures the "Crouching Woman" is based on a figure from the tympanum of the Gates of Hell, a bronze portal meant for the Musee des Arts Decoratifs which Auguste Rodin never finished. There The Crouching Woman represents -- with her caryatid-like pose, powerful and vulnerable at the same time -- one of the lost souls being judged in the Last Judgment. This beautiful statue is a detailed reproduction of this character from Rodin's famous sculpture, rich with the colorations and hand sculpted texture after the original. It will be a joy for the true Rodin collector!
ABOUT RODIN'S INSPIRATION
Auguste Rodin's work is characterized by a passion for the human body and he considered himself incapable of any creativity if he did not have a living model in front of him. "In everything I follow nature and I never pretend I am able to control her. My only ambition is to be subservient and faithful to her," he said. Questions about his often controversial, erotic works were answered with the remark: "Art is actually nothing more than a manifestation of lust, which only arises from the potency to love."
