Encouraged to sculpt by Constantin Brancusi, Modigliani developed his own distinctive style. The elongated forms and simple linear features--eclectically borrowed from African and oceanic tribal masks, medieval carving and classical sculpture--show how for Modigliani the primitive could be decisively modern. This Elogated Head has been described as an example of perfect resolution in his work, combining sacredness with spirituality. Licensed reproduction from the Tate Gallery in London after Modigliani's original sculpture from 1911-12.
Made from resin, aged sienna finish, black base, 25"H x 9"L x 4.5"D.
