The Ziggurat was an ancient Mesopotamian temple that was very similar the Egyptian pyramids. The difference was that the top of the ziggurat was flat and constructed with a shrine or temple at its peak. Using sun-baked bricks, the receding tiers numbered from 2 to 7 with access to the shrine by a series of ramps on the side of the structure. The receding tier pyramid style dates back from the late 6th century BC in ancient Mesopotamia, now modern Iraq and Iran.
