In 1820, a Greek farmer on the Aegean Island of Melos found the Aphrodite broken into pieces and scattered about in a cavern. Collecting the pieces, he hid them in his barn until the ruling Turkish authorities found her. Working out a covert payoff, the French then obtained and loaded her onto a frigate in the Aegean. The Aphrodite was bound for Paris, and ultimately The Louvre.
