Florence Nightingale (1820-1910) was born in Florence, Italy, and grew up in England to become the first and most well known nurse in history. Florence revolutionized methods of caring for the sick and wounded. During the Crimean War, she enlisted 37 other nurses and reduced the death rate from 40% to 2%. She returned home to England and became an advisor to many countries on the building and management of hospitals. She became the first woman to be awarded the Order of Merit in 1907.
