The Golden Gate Bridge is one of several landmarks which defines the cityscape of San Francisco, California. Named for the Golden Gate Straight, the bridge's construction began January 5th, 1933 and its use commenced on May 28th, 1937. Joseph B. Strauss was the chief engineer. The bridge has a length of 1.7 miles, suspension span of 4,200 feet, and a height of 746 feet. The bridge was completed ahead of schedule and under budget at a cost of 35 million dollars. It is a marvel of modern engineering!
