This sculpture is one of Michelangelo's last artworks (ca 1547 - 1553, Italian Renaissance master sculptor). According to Vasari, he sculpted the Florentine Pieta to decorate his tomb in Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome. It illustrates the Deposition (descent from the cross). We see four figures in this composition -- the dead body of Jesus Christ, Nicodemus (or possibly Joseph of Arimathea), Mary Magdalene and the Virgin Mary. Michelangelo was unsatisfied with his work and smashed it breaking Christ's leg. The face of Nicodemus may be a self-portrait of Michelangelo himself. Original statue is in the Museo del Duomo, Florence.
Florentine Pieta or Deposition by Michelangelo is made from bonded bronze, light color details, 11.5"H.
