Antonio Canova was born in 1757 in Possagno, near Treviso. As the son of a stone-cutter, he spent his artistic apprenticeship first in Venice and then in Rome. It was here that he studied ancient sculpture and came into contact with artists and intellectuals who theorized and returned to the classical style. This sculpture of a nude figure lying on a pedestal, which is original work, is carved with white marble. It was the last work of Canova, and the carving was finished by others.
Hermaphrodite Classical Statue, Hermes and Aphrodite had a son named Hermaphroditus. The Greek nymph, Salmacis, was helplessly in love with the son of the gods. She begged the gods to let her body become one with Hermaphroditus. The request was granted, and together as one, they became Hermaphrodite or transsexual, who possessed both male and female attributes. To the Greeks this symbolized the physical ideals of both male and female.
This Hermaphrodite Sleeping White Sculpture is made from cold cast resin, in a white finish, measures 4.5"H x 12"L x 5.25"W.
