Legend has it that King Tiberinus Silvius drowned in the river. The ancient Greek god Jupiter (Zeus) decided to make Tiberinus the guardian spirit of the river now know as the Tibre River.
Faustulus was the shepherd that found the infants Romulus and Remus, who were being suckled by a she-wolf, known as Lupa, on the Palatine Hill. The twin brothers, Romulus and Remus were said to have been dumped in its waters and it was the mythical she-wolf that aided them. Faustulus, with his wife Acca Larentia, raised the children whom many believed to be the sons of Mars and the founder of Rome. This scene shows the shepherd surrounded by the children with Lupa the she-wolf by his side.
