Now considered to be one of the greatest sculptors of all time, Auguste Rodin had a turbulent early period enduring the boredom of several art schools and poverty as a young artist living in a nation engaged in war. However, when France recovered from the Franco-Prussian War, Rodin was prepared with sculpture models that would re-adorn France.

As illustrated in this sculpture, Eternal Idol, by the two lovers who tenderly touch, Rodin's work is characterized by his deft modeling of the human form in a semi-impressionistic, semi-realistic image.
