The focal point of the Art Institute of Chicago's Fullerton Hall is the original 30 foot diameter leaded-glass dome that graces the ceiling. Executed and installed by the Louis Comfort Tiffany Studios in 1898 and then covered over at an unknown date, the dome was discovered when acoustical tiles were removed. The art glass has now been carefully conserved to its original splendor.
Stained Glass, an Ancient Art
Stained glass was first produced in the late 10th century. Small pieces of glass were attached to one another with lead strips, producing beautiful effects. Clear glass and glass enamels were introduced in the 15th century. Medieval craftsmen began creating complex designs by painting with colored enamels on a single piece of glass. Most earlier enamels were opaque; however, by 1650, Johann Schaper invented transparent enamels which allowed for stained glass to become truly an art of light. Today, the artists of Glassmasters use these same ancient techniques.
Made from kiln-fired stained glass (guaranteed to never fade), metal frame, hanging chain, made in USA, 10.5" diameter.
