The Rape of the Sabine Women
|
"In the sculpture The Rape of The Sabine Women it is not depicting the actual raping of the women. The story goes that the Roman men are taking them back to Rome to make more Roman babies but by legend, the Romans gave the women a choice to marry them in which case it was not actually rape even though that is how it was named. Also this masterpiece is an excellent example of figura serpentinata which is a style typical in Mannerist Sculpture and painting where instead of contrapposto posing the figures are intertwined in a spiral like movement. This sculpture is elongated, the hand and feel are extremely expressive and it also shows the interest in open space. It is one of my favorite sculptures by Giovanni Bologna." -- Posted by Amber
